How to Help Your Senior Plan for the New Year

By Debbie Nunn, 4:32 pm on

A new year means a renewed beginning. 2021 presents an exceptional opportunity for seniors to create and implement habit routine changes that will allow them to lead healthier and happier lives. While many people around the world set resolutions at the start of each new year, not everyone sees their goals all the way through to completion. We’re making that easier for seniors! Here are five goals that can help get your senior’s new year off to the right, healthy start.

Make Healthy Living Goals

Regular physical activity is safe and healthy for older adults. There are many conditions that can be improved with mild to moderate exercise, such as water aerobics, walking, and stretching. These activities can help your senior control their weight, strengthen their muscles and bones, and improve their mood.

Meet New People

Volunteering is a fantastic way to give both back to the community and provide a sense of accomplishment and fulfillment for seniors! Furthermore, it connects your senior with like-minded individuals and does wonders for their social well-being. This year, you can help them find an organization, whether it is in-person or virtually, to get involved with and get better social interaction.

Challenge the Brain Regularly

Staying mentally sharp and aware is a top goal for many older adults. Here’s a fun fact: Seniors are the fastest-growing segment of computer users! This is because learning a new hobby or interest, like technology and virtual communication, is a great way to challenge the brain and stay mentally stimulated.

Get Plenty of Rest

Proper sleep is vital for seniors. If your senior family member is having difficulty sleeping, this year is a great opportunity to adopt some new, healthier sleeping habits or even to consult with a specialist and get to the bottom of their troubles.

Be Conscious of Overall Health

Your senior’s health is changing frequently with the aging process, so help them make it a priority to keep up with their health. Schedule their annual visit with their doctor and stay proactive.
